Did you know that March is National Craft Month? It was established in 1994 by the Craft & Hobby Association (now the Association for Creative Industries [AFCI]). The idea behind it was to help people discover their creative side and introduce or re-introduce Americans to different crafts and hobbies like crocheting and knitting, scrapbooking, leather working, wood working, etc. Crafting is a good way to relax and it can help to relieve stress that is often experienced in our very active lives.

So, during this month, it’s a good time to try a new craft or return to your favorite craft that you thought you didn’t have time to enjoy. In this post, I’m going to share with you 12 awesome crafting ideas that I think would be a great start to try, or return to, in order to release your inner creativity.  So, let’s get started!

1. Crocheting is very relaxing and a low-cost craft to try. It’s an effective way to release your creativity. There have been studies to show that crocheting helps to relieve anxiety, reduce stress and help with insomnia. All you really need to get started is some yarn, a crochet hook, some scissors, and you’re good to go. Of course, there are other items that can make your experience easier like stitch markers, a tape measure, storage, and much more. You can find all of your crocheting needs at Annie’s and Mary Maxim. In addition, I have 2 crochet patterns available in my Sultana’s Crochet Shop, the Skinnee Scarf Crochet Pattern and the Big Button Cowl Crochet Pattern

2. Macrame is another fun craft you can try using yarn. It is the art of making textiles using different knotting techniques. You can produce some beautiful wall hangings, belts, and those very popular friendship bracelets. Blick, Annie’s and Mary Maxim have macramé instruction books and carry yarn or string that can be used for this medium.

3. Needlepoint is a type of canvas work which includes cross stitch and embroidery. It’s another relaxing craft to try. If you’re a beginner, it’s good to get started with a kit. Some examples are kits to make a bench pillow or a wall hanging.

4. Diamond Dotz is an awesome new craft where you can make amazing painting designs using tiny diamond shape facets. It’s like a combination of cross stitching and paint by numbers. There are some awesome kits available that can get you started in this exciting new craft. Some of the paintings you can design are still life paintings of nature (i.e. flowers and landscapes). You can check out some awesome kits at Mary Maxim.

5. Jewelry Making is another popular craft. Blick Art Materials has a large supply of all types of jewelry making supplies. Some of the categories are beads, wire, stringing materials i.e. cord, jewelry findings, books, soldering materials and more.

6. Scrapbooking is all about telling a story. You choose the subject that you want to journal about and choose pictures that help tell your story. You can use a variety of materials to express your thoughts. To get started you do need a book and other materials i.e., acid free paper, card stock, stickers, trimming scissors, adhesive, etc. Blick carries a large array of scrapbooking accessories that you use to tell your story.

7. Drawing & Painting is a cool way to express your creativity. There are so many different mediums that you could use for drawing and painting i.e., charcoal pencil, colored pencils, soft pastels, oil pastels, acrylic paint, oil paint, tempera paint, watercolor, etc. Express yourself using these mediums and more at Blick Art Materials.

8. Quilting is the process of joining at least three layers together by sewing with a needle and thread or sewing machine. You can make simple designs or go for it with intricate designs. Quilting can produce functional pieces like bedspreads, clothing, handbags to decorative items like wall hangings. You can get your quilting supplies, kits, books, classes and more at Annie’s.

9. Sewing is a skill that can be rewarding both practically and artistically. You can make functional pieces that can also reflect your aesthetic style. For newbies, you can learn the basics of sewing through books and online classes. For the more experienced sewist, you can expand your repertoire with different patterns and techniques. Annie’s now sells fabric, sewing supplies (i.e. dress, shirt, tote bag), patterns, and online classes to help you get started.

10. Plastic Canvas is a lightweight material with regularly spaced holes. It’s usually used as a foundation base for needlepoint or embroidery using acrylic or wool yarn. You can make your own designs or use a convenient kit. Mary Maxim has hundreds of plastic canvas kits available i.e., villages, coasters, placemats, tissue covers, baskets, bird houses and much more. You can find your kit or pattern here.

11. Woodworking (Kits) is the skill of shaping or constructing articles from wood, according to the Merriam Webster definition. It could be lots of fun constructing 3D pieces with your own hands. Mary Maxim has lots of Wood Kits i.e., an Orpheus Steam Punk Music Box Mechanical Kit, a Prime Steam Express Mechanical Kit, Miniature House Kits, Cruiser Motorcycle Kit and more. Check out all of the awesome kits here.

12. Puzzles have always been an enjoyable past time activity. You can work on a puzzle alone or with help from family and friends. Puzzles come in a variety of pieces and subject matters. Many families enjoy working on large puzzles together and the final results are extremely rewarding. Some of the puzzles include nature scenes, cupcakes, sewing spools, mini cereal box puzzles and more. You can find lots of fun puzzles at Mary Maxim and Annie’s.

So, crafting is an incredibly fun and relaxing activity that can be enjoyed by everyone. There are many different types of crafts to choose from and offered for many skill levels. Crafting is especially good for children. It can help teach them motor skills and inspire their creativity. It’s a fun activity that can bring the entire family together.

Personally, I love crocheting, jewelry making and drawing. I think that I might try a plastic canvas project soon. What types of crafts do you like? Let me know in the comments.

In the meantime, Happy Crafting!
